"Meet the MUNCHIES: Cannabis Research in Manitoba" In 2018, Canada became a leader in cannabis legalization for non-medical purposes and the interest in using cannabis for medical purposes continues to increase. While there are some rigorous research studies that support potential benefits, most diseases and conditions that patients report using cannabis as a therapy for do not have evidence to support safe or effective benefit. Potential concerns include: problematic use, interactions with other medicines, cognitive impairment that must be considered within the context of potential benefits and existing treatment options. Our panel of experts will discuss hot topics on cannabis used for medical purposes, provide an update on current medical cannabis research happening in Manitoba and discuss barriers to the use of cannabis for medical purposes. Moderator: Dr. Karen Ethans, Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Panelists: Dr. Lynda Balneaves, RN, Professor, College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences; Deputy Director, Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids Dr. Paul Daeninck, Attending Medical Oncologist, CancerCare Manitoba; Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, cross-appointment to Family Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine; Consultant in Palliative Medicine, WRHA Palliative Care Program Dr. Lauren Kelly, Clinical Trialist, George & Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation, University of Manitoba; Assistant Professor, Pediatrics & Child Health, Max Rady College of Medicine; Scientific Director, Canadian Childhood Cannabinoid Clinical Trials (C4T); Scientist, Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba http://www.c4trials.org https://ccic.net About Café Scientifique The University of Manitoba Café Scientifiques bring together experts with non-researchers (you, me, neighbours and friends) in a relaxed atmosphere (wherever you are joining us from virtually!), to learn about their research and the questions it raises. Cafés are scheduled throughout the academic year, on a weeknight, and encompass topics that reflect the breadth of research underway at the UM. They are hosted and organized by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International). https://umanitoba.ca/research/cafe-sc...
