In this video from August 1992, Dr. Martin Lings (1909-2005) reflects on his first meeting with Frithjof Schuon, looking back on more than 50 years as one of Schuon's closest friends and students. Dr. Lings was a perennialist/traditionalist writer, editor and translator, as well as a scholar and teacher of Islamic mysticism (Sufism) and art, and of Shakespeare. He was Keeper of Oriental Manuscripts at the British Museum and the British Library for many years. Martin Lings was also a long-time associate of both Schuon (1907-1998) and René Guénon (1886-1951). In this clip, Lings shares his powerful impressions upon meeting Schuon for the first time. He also shares Guénon's comments to him regarding Schuon's spiritual station. Finally, Lings expresses his own long-held certainty of the deep spiritual quality of his mentor and friend, Frithjof Schuon. Author and editor Michael F. Fitzgerald included this and two other clips in this playlist in his address to the 2025 Schuon Lectures at Respect Graduate School. Dr. Harry Oldmeadow was the primary lecturer. This video includes Part One and Part Two of this interview, which were previously posted separately on YouTube. Its quality has also been improved.
