Day 2 of the College Football Playoff gave us two very different takeaways. Miami went on the road and beat Texas A&M in a game defined by defense, turnovers, and control of the line of scrimmage. Neither team trusted their quarterback, but Miami ran the ball more effectively, protected the football, and did just enough to advance. The bigger story, though, is what Day 2 exposed about the CFP format. Group of 5 teams simply don’t have the trench depth or line-of-scrimmage talent to compete at this stage. Tulane and James Madison were overwhelmed early, and these games were effectively over before halftime. This isn’t March Madness. Football doesn’t allow for shooting variance or fluky upsets. At this level, depth, offensive line play, and defensive line rotations decide everything — and that’s where the gap is impossible to close.
