The Thurauen Nature Center is an information and experience center in Flaach in the Zürcher Weinland region of Switzerland. It was founded in 2011 and provides information about a renaturation project on the Thur. River straightening, drainage and conversion to agricultural land and settlement areas have destroyed over 90% of the original river floodplains in Switzerland. Yet they are also of great importance to humans, because floodplains protect against flooding, provide clean drinking water and are valuable recreational areas. The Thur floodplains are the largest floodplain landscape on the Swiss Plateau and a nature reserve of national importance. They are home to a large number of rare animal and plant species, such as the kingfisher, the oriole or the beaver. Since 2008, the Thur floodplains have been the scene of one of the largest renaturation projects in the country. The Thur is now allowed to flow freely again for the last five kilometers before it flows into the Rhine. With the project "Flood Protection and Floodplain Landscape Thur Estuary", the Thur is not only getting back its dynamics. For the first time in Switzerland, a link was sought between nature conservation, flood protection and tourism. In order to inform the population about the renaturation of the Thur and to enable them to have direct encounters with nature, the Canton of Zurich commissioned the PanEco Foundation to set up and operate the Thurauen Nature Center. The nature center is thus part of a donation-financed foundation that is committed to nature and species conservation as well as environmental education and has been awarded the ZEWO seal of approval. The interactive exhibition in the visitor center teaches visitors about the habitats of a river floodplain. A symbolic river course shows the development of the Thur from straightening to renaturation.
