It is one of the works that made César Franck famous: the Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra (Variations symphoniques pour piano et orchestre). Here Bertrand Chamayou (piano) and the orchestra Les Siècles play under the baton of François-Xavier Roth. The concert took place in 2022 at the Prague Spring Festival in the famous Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague. César Franck (1822 - 1890) is considered one of the most important French composers of the Romantic period. Franck was famous for his work as an organist with virtuoso improvisations. He was even compared in this respect to Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750). Franck was also a famous teacher, many of his organ and piano students went on to have great careers. And Franck was also influential as a composer because he was innovative and avant-garde for his time. The genesis of the Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra (M. 46) begins with an understatement. Franck wanted to write “a little something” for the outstanding Parisian pianist Louis Diémer (1843 - 1919) as a thank-you for a performance of Franck's symphonic poem Les Djinns, which had - unusually - received good reviews. The “trifle” became the Symphonic Variations, composed in 1885 and premiered on May 1, 1886, naturally performed by the musician it was dedicated to, Louis Diémer. It is striking that the piece for orchestra and solo piano received little attention during Franck's lifetime, but later became one of the works that ultimately made his reputation. To this day, the Symphonic Variations are frequently performed as a popular concert piece. Formally, the Symphonic Variations are not easy to approach. Franck creates a complex fabric from two contrasting thematic motifs, placing the orchestra and solo piano on an equal footing. There is no division into individual movements. Instead, the two motifs are sometimes varied in a single flow, but sometimes also developed freely in the manner of a fantasy. This showcases Franck as a master of cyclic form. Within the variations genre, which evolved over centuries and was rich in forms, Franck's Variations symphoniques are among the most striking examples of the late 19th century. Les Siècles is a French orchestra renowned for its diverse repertoire and historically informed performances. What sets the ensemble apart is its dedication to playing each work on period-appropriate instruments, faithfully capturing the sound and spirit of its time. Beyond the concert hall, Les Siècles is deeply committed to music education and outreach, regularly performing in schools, hospitals, and prisons to bring music to a wider audience. © 2022 CESKA TELEVIZE Enjoy more concerts in your personal concert hall: • LISTEN AND WATCH - your personal concert hall and in our playlist with piano concertos: • PIANO CONCERTOS Subscribe to DW Classical Music: / dwclassicalmusic #franck #romanticmusic #pianoconcerto
