Bhāvayātrā first presents Andal's Thiruppavai, a set of 30 hymns on Bhagwan Krishna. Aazhi Mazhai Kanna — Varali – Adi In this verse, Āṇḍāḷ offers a heartfelt prayer for life-sustaining rain, addressing Krishna as the sovereign who commands the clouds. With loving authority, she implores Him to summon dark rain-bearing clouds and pour forth torrential showers for the welfare of all. Her concern extends far beyond personal well-being, encompassing agriculture, cattle, and the sustenance of society as a whole. The Vārāḷi rāga lends a plaintive, intense, and earnest quality to this plea, heightening its emotional depth. Through this pāsuram, Āṇḍāḷ reveals that true devotion is inseparable from responsibility toward the natural world, and that spiritual practice must embrace aspirations for harmony, abundance, and prosperity for all beings. Transliteration: ōṅgi ulahaḷanda uttaman pēr pāḍi| nāngaḷ nam pāvaikku śāttu nīrāḍināl | tīṅginni nāḍellām tingaḷ mummāri peydu| ōngu peruñ cennelūḍu kayal uhaḷa| pūnguvalai pōdīl poṛivaṇḍu kaṇpaḍuppa| tēngādē pukkirundu cīrtta mulai pattivāṅga| kuḍam niṛaikkum vaḷḷal perum paśugaḷ| nīṅgāda śelvam niṛaindelōr empāvāy || Translation: O Lord Varuna, the angel of bursting rains! Please bring an abundance of rains without being a miser. Please collect all the water from the deep sea, go high up and roar with your dark-blue-hued clouds spreading throughout the sky resembling the appearance of that blue-hued Sriman Narayan. Thereafter sparkle like the glowing wheel (Sudarshan Wheel) in the beautiful hand of broad-shouldered Lord Padmanabhan and bring down incessant rains with thunderous sounds like the sounds made by the conch, Panchajanya of God. The thundershowers of that incessant rain should resemble the incessant rows of arrows released from the bow (Shaarngam) of Lord Vishnu. The rains should be for the betterment of the entire world. We will also take our bath in those rains to purify ourselves and thereby perform our Vrat.
