PSK Masterclass is produced by Khathu Nematei and this episode features Award Winning Gospel-Jazz Artist Bheka Mthethwa. Bheka Mthethwa Bheka Mthethwa - Supernal Sounds, master bassist turned vocalist born in Richards Bay, Northern Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. Bheka began his musical journey at the age of 10; playing keyboards at church and learning from his elder brother. By age 15, he had developed great interest in the bass guitar and started teaching himself by listening to Gospel music and R&B recordings. In pursuit for deeper knowledge and experience, Mthethwa has attended the annual standard Bank national youth Jazz Festival in Grahamgtown. He later worked with the University of Kwazulu Natal students band at the SAJE(South African Jazz Education) Conference. Bheka Mthethwa is a nationally in-demand and highly influential professional session Bass Guitarist, as well as Award-Winning Artist; Composer; Producer; Musical Director and Arranger. The number of Artists & Projects Bheka Mthethwa has been involved with include, Sibongile Khumalo, Joyous Celebration, Tshwane Gospel Choir, Steve Dyer, Ernie Smith, Ray Phiri, Khaya Mthethwa, Judith Sephuma, Benjamin Dube, Liquid Deep, Micasa, Jabu Hlongwane, Simphiwe Dana, Mthunzi Namba, Ntokozo Mbambo, Nqubeko Mbatha, Siphokazi, Swazi Dlamini, Proverb as well as international stars like, Kirk Franklin, Chevelle Franklyn, Donnie McClurkin, Joe Mettle and James Fortune. For the past decade, Bheka Mthethwa has been consistently offering bass guitar sessions in chart topping albums by local and international icons. He has also toured the United Kingdom (London, Birmingham and Manchester) where he represented the South African Arts alongside other Artists from different ends of the world. Mthethwa released his first single album entitled “Ubusisiwe” in December 2014. This was followed by his full album “Supernal Sounds” which was released in 2017. The uniqueness of this project lies in the fact that a musician that traditionally occupies the background subverts the norm and takes the centre stage with his bass guitar as the forefront artist. In Supernal Sounds, Mthethwa showcases not only his strings’ full-bodied tones but also his inventiveness as an arranger, producer and director too. Supernal Sounds scored Mthethwa two awards: • SABC Crown Gospel Award 2018 for Best Gospel-Jazz Song category. • AGMMA UK Award 2019 (African Gospel Music and Media Awards) presented in London, United Kingdom for Instrumental Musician of Excellence category. #BhekaMthethwa #khathunematei #pskmusic
