A few days earlier, during Marie's gig at the Club Obi Wan, a girlfriend of Boss Lao Che had left her a note. 'Go to Xi'an and the Valley of the Upright Stones. There the Barrier falters...' Now as the cart rattled into the city Marie remembered the girl - the otherworldly beauty in her flawless face, a face enhanced rather than marked by those clouded, blind, pearl-like eyes. Eyes that had been fixed upon Marie's as she had sung. South from Xi'an, Marie finally reached the valley. Long left to the wilderness it now appeared that the location was the site of fresh investigation. Men were moving about the undergrowth with scythes and long machetes clearing back the choking vegetation. Surely no coincidence? Taking care to remain unseen Marie examined some of the stones. They were statues! Weathered and eroded back to near illegibility the ancient stone showed signs of runes and graven markings. Marie took out her pocket knife and began to clear away the lichen and moss infesting the moist recesses of the artificial crevices.
