Last Minute Gifts is the funny Christmas song that says what you are really thinking when you get those unwanted gifts. A Christmas song or an Anti Christmas song? You decide. What will YOU return during Boxing Day madness? Now on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/las... The Chords and Lyrics are available in pdf, for free, at http://www.nathanfleet.com RUNNER UP! Song of the Year songwriting contest (Holiday) Still haven't found what I'm shopping for ? Black Friday and Impulse Buying go hand in hand! I worked in shipping/receiving for a number of years in a large retail store and saw so much junk come in. It was then I learned about add-on sales and how employees are told to "suggest" these pieces of crap to customers, especially as the last few days of the holiday season draw near. After boxing day, I'd haul all the crap to the back. I saw a lot of Nutcrackers and Jam Trees one year and that is where it all started, many years ago. I actually started writing lyrics to the song last year but there wasn't enough time to properly record, mix and create a video in time for Christmas so it was put off until 2013. Since then, I started thinking about what I wanted the video to look like. Originally I was just going to put on a Santa hat and do one take with my ukulele. Then the composer in me started arranging the tune. Then the filmmaker in me started visualizing something more. I had been painting one of my walls, the same colour as my blue guitar picks, for the purpose of a video backdrop. Once I bought the Santa suit, I did a test against the wall and the red just popped out, so I went with that. I spent a few days shopping at the CHRISTMAS STORE on Ottawa St in Hamilton. When I got home, I started tacking things to the wall to create a frame for the "Santa"character. I also tried to purchase each item mentioned in the song. It was kind of hard to do since it was all purchased before Halloween. Originally I wanted a larger cast but with the confined space, I decided to use the ornaments to represent the people I was singing about. I bought some damaged, white ornaments and a paint marker and went to town! My friend, Jesse Senko, used me as a Unicorn Hunter in his video for Sprng Clip ( • Sprng Fantasy ) so I asked if I could use his elf photo for the snow globes. Of all the things I bought, the ugliest things were the clear ornaments with the pink feathers in them. I also remember shopping at Home Sense and laughing at how ugly things were (I'm talking to you deer antler candle holder) and I think I turned some people away from purchasing things. I found my wee purple/green nutcracker there. I borrowed a Canon Rebel T2i from my friend Peter McNamee (Let Him Be) and shot it all on that using the stock lens for most, and a different lend for the ornament close-ups. It's pretty much composed of master shots and object close-ups. With my other movies (Air Knob, and Jabba's Palace Band Audition) I did a Wide, Medium, Close for each scene. In this music video, the focus was not on the "licks"so I kept it wide. Took about 3 days to shoot and 11 hours to edit. I like editing and testing the cuts on the computer and on TV. Then I re-edit based on watching it in the environment it is headed for. An editing suite is no place to watch and judge a cut. I edited the video at the Factory Media Centre on James St N in Hamilton. The acoustic instruments are the Ukulele, bass, vocals (lead and 4 backup) and some woodblocks. The piano, bells, chimes, drums, tuba were all performed and captured virtually. All the virtual instruments were done in Garage Band and included the orchestral Jam Pack sounds. From there, I export each track into Cubase where I recorded the live instruments and mixed from. Once the mix was done, I uploaded it to Richard at Trillium Sound Mastering, in Quebec and sent me the final .wav master I spent about a week recording and two days of mixing in my studio, Blue Pick Media. I like leaving things for a day and revisiting with fresh ears. ©2013 Nathan Fleet SOCAN Written and Performed by Nathan Fleet Recorded and Mixed at Blue Pick Media Mastered by Richard Addison at Trillium Sound Mastering Thanks to: My Family (I pretty much take over a space and leave gear and junk all over the place) My Mommy (she actually buys me nice things but I do remember a tight pair of turquoise underwear one year) Peter McNamee for the camera and accessories Factory Media Centre for the new suites and room!
