How we treat our soils is directly connected to the health of our animals, our food, and our land. We know cows are a good tool for regenerating soils when we allow them to graze in one herd, eat half the forage and trample the rest (spreading their manure evenly) and then moving on to the next small pasture, letting the previous piece of land rest. These quick moves let most of the farm rest, most of the time. What do we call this method of raising cattle that makes soil more productive without fertilizer, allows farmers to support their families with more money and less work, and gives habitats to quail and other wild birds? AMP grazing. There are a few definitions of AMP grazing out there… Here’s how we define it: Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing mimics how bison helped create 15 foot deep topsoils on the great plains. The bison would eat only half the forage and then stomp the rest covering the soil and their manure would get evenly spread - a natural fertilizer - then the magic happens. As the herd moves on, the land is left to rest. It is this heavy hit and rest that allows the native plants to flourish - sucking down carbon and keeping soil microbes cool while they do the hard work. AMP farmers mimic this rest period by shifting cattle between paddocks more often; giving their cattle fresh grass daily and their fields time to regenerate. The next stop in our roadshow is Telluride, CO, on August 21! Join us at the Sheridan Opera House on August 21 at 5:30p - Q&A with director Peter Byck follows the screening. @mountainfilm #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativeag #regenerativefarm #regenerativeagriculturemovement #carbonnation #rootssodeep #USDA #farmers #farming
