For many organisations, legacy giving remains an under-explored income stream; something that is often considered the preserve only of major institutions with fully-fledged Legacy departments, or those who work with large portfolios of High Net Worth donors. In reality, legacy giving offers an opportunity for people of all income brackets to leave a gift to the causes they feel passionate about, and be part of an organisation’s long-term story. Legacy giving is also on the rise: in 2024, the number of bequests made to UK charities was the highest ever recorded. In 2023, one in five UK charity supporters over the age of 40 said they had left a gift in their Will, and bequests to arts, culture and heritage organisations compare very favourably with those made to other causes. Plenty of reasons, then, for arts and culture organisations of all sizes to think about equipping themselves for effective legacy giving. The fact remains, though, that many of us don’t know where to start in both negotiating the practical and legal requirements for this kind of giving, and in preparing for conversations with supporters that touch on a topic - what happens when we’re gone - that can still feel so taboo. So how can we take the plunge and get to grips with the form of giving that is, perhaps more than any other, all about the future of our sector? Hear from our expert panel about their experiences in managing legacy giving, the skills required to do this sensitively and effectively, and the impact of legacy gifts on their organisations.
