Turnips can be wonderfully sweet and crisp when you grow the right varieties — especially the Japanese Hakurei types. In this video I show how to sow, transplant, protect, and harvest turnips for both early spring and late autumn success, using simple No Dig principles. Through 2025, Carly and I filmed many sequences to illustrate how to grow different vegetables. I hope that you enjoy this look at turnips. These fast-growing brassicas produce beautiful tender greens as well as crisp bulbs that can be eaten raw like a radish. Multi-sowing gives great harvests from small space, and you can pick the biggest roots first while the rest continue to grow. Sow mid-February to 10th March under cover, or mid-March outside with fleece, for harvesting in May. Sow again in August for welcome autumn harvests. Avoid sowing late spring to midsummer when they are more likely to flower early. Fleece helps protect against cold nights and cabbage root fly, while No Dig soil encourages quick establishment, good moisture retention, and healthy roots with minimal pest damage. 🎥 Filmed 14th February to mid-May 2025 Filmed by Carly Dutton-Edwards In Homeacres No Dig Garden, Somerset, UK You can join this channel by paying a monthly fee, to support our work with helping gardeners grow better, and to receive monthly videos made only for members: / @charlesdowding1nodig #nodiggardening #charlesdowding #growyourownfood #turnips #springvegetables #homeacres #ukgardening #nodig 00:00 Introduction 01:00 Japanese Hakurei type 01:27 Best time to sow 02:52 Buying seed, Tokyo Cross variety 03:13 I demonstrate multisowing 05:43 Seedlings four weeks later 06:41 Plants recently transplanted, under fleece against frost 07:35 I demonstrate transplanting, using a dibber 08:58 Watering and spacing 09:47 Benefits of using fleece 10:49 Seven weeks since transplanting - timing of harvest 11:36 Fleece cover still on, against cabbage root fly
