Anfal Genocide - How and Why? Apr 25, 2021 Speaker: Dr Shorsh Haji Panel chair: Dr Cengiz Gunes A webinar discussing the reasons behind the Anfal genocide that led to the death of over 180,000 Kurdish people. It presents classified official documents from the Iraqi Ba'ath regime that shows the intent and thinking behind the Anfal genocide. Dr Shorsh Haji is from the town of Koya in Bashur Kurdistan. He is a Civil engineer by profession achieving his BSc in Engineering at the University of Mosul and a Masters in Water Resources Engineering from City University London. He has a PhD in Political Science from University of Exeter and his thesis was titled "Reactive Nationalism in a Homogenizing State: The Kurdish Nationalism Movement in Ba’thist Iraq, 1963 – 2003". Dr Shorsh served as Peshmerga for 11 years before the uprising of 1991. He worked as a Researcher for Human Rights Watch in Washington DC – USA between 1992 – 1994. He has worked as a lecturer at the School of Engineering, Lambeth College, London 1996 - 2009. He was elected member of Iraqi Parliament between 2010 - 2014 (Goran Movement). Dr Shorsh was the first Kurd who published research and a book on Anfal in 1989 & 1990. He has written many articles and published several books including "Destruction of a Nation", "Mass killing - Anfal Victims", "Anfal - The Kurds and Iraqi State", "Arabization of Kerkuk", and "Kurdish Nationalism".
