This piece in two sections follows directly after L'Arlequine ( • L'Arlequine by François Couperin played on... ) in the twenty-third Ordre of the fourth book of Pieces de Clavecin by François Couperin. The first part is marked Gravement ferme, et pointé. In the low register in which this section is set, the high frequency clicking associated with the ornaments which Couperin adds does seem to evoke the clatter of goat hooves on hard earth. It is to be followed immediately (qu'on jouë de suite) by the Second Partie, marked Vivement et dans un goût burlesque. The rumbustiousness of the second part balances the theatrical mock-gravity of the first quite nicely. In this pair Couperin gives us a fine example of the contrast between the Olympian and the Dionysian manners of composition. This instrument was made in 1987 on the by-then shop standard plan I drew in 1979 for a late-18th c. French harpsichord. The recording was made in 2007 at the Hubbard shop in Saxonville, MA. The instrument is tuned in a 1/5th-comma temperament ordinaire. The first Partie is played on coupled 8's throughout. The second Partie is played as a dialog between the plein jeu on the lower manual and the single 8' of the upper manual.
