In 1916, Captain Louis Lane and Chicago Millionaire John Borden, along with 21 crew and 250 tons of merchandise, set sail on the schooner Great Bear from the Pribilof Islands to St Matthew Island in the Bering Sea, Alaska, an uninhabited island later famous of reindeer overpopulation. They ended up crashing into Pinnacle Rock, near Lasten Rock and spending over 2 weeks surviving on St Matthew, even though their ship was supposed to be the strongest arctic ship around. Commenters: @JamesA.Garfield & @sunnyjeffrey9170 Images from Popular Mechanics, Lanefamilyhistory.org, Wikipedia, chicago.curbed.com, Google Maps Mistake: I mentioned that it wasn't clear if the USCG received the distress signal. However, the "Borden Vessel On The Rocks" newspaper article states that the USCG did receive the signal.
