This masterclass shares the work that Dr Robert Pless has invested in developing a traffic cam system to support sex trafficking investigations by recognizing the hotel rooms in pictures of trafficking victims. Prof. Pless will share the context for this project and ways that this system is currently being used at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as well as special challenges that come from this problem domain. Attacking these problems led his team to specific improvements in large-scale classification with Deep Metric Learning. He will explain what they have learned in building this system, ways we can better understand and explain how the hotel image matching is working, and why it was so important to get millions of images donated to our system from travellers taking pictures of their rooms.
