Dodgers baserunner Shohei Ohtani failed to retouch second base on a caught fly ball while HP Umpire Andy Fletcher called Padres batter Xander Bogaerts out on a pitch clock violation (his third strike) as MLB opened its 2024 season in Seoul, South Korea. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2024/... Discord: / discord Facebook: / closecallsports Twitter: / closecallsports The Ohtani play in Game 1 on a fly ball relates to the baserunner's rounding of second base prior to returning to first base, failing to retouch second on the way back to first. Official Baseball Rule 5.06(b)(1) requires all returning runners retouch all bases in reverse order. San Diego thus successfully appealed the missed re-touch at second base for an inning-ending double play. In Game 2, batter Bogaerts found himself out on strikes as HP Umpire Andy Fletcher ruled that Bogaerts had violated the pitch clock rules by requesting too many timeouts during an 8th inning at-bat. The pace of play "pitch clock" rules for batters state that a batter is entitled to no more than ONE offensive time out per plate appearance, and that requesting any timeouts in excess of this limit shall result in an automatic strike for the batter's pitch timer violation. Bogaerts thought he only requested one time out, but Fletcher had him requesting two, the disagreement appearing to stem from the first called strike of the at-bat, which Bogaerts thought was a ball. According to Bogaerts' argument, when the Padres batter approached Fletcher between pitches and said "out", Fletcher thought he was requesting a "time out" and granted the request. Thus, when Bogaerts asked for a time out on the subsequent pitch, Fletcher penalized Bogaerts for requesting two time outs per plate appearance, more than the limit of one.
