In this video I show how to play Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance on the fiddle. The dance, performed on the first Monday in September in the village of Abbot's Bromley in Staffordshire, is said to be the oldest dance in England. The dancers use reindeer horns which have been radiocarbon dated to around 1050AD, making it likely that they come from the Vikings. The horns hang in the local church for the rest of the year. The tune which I play here is a jig, also known as Robinson's Tune. It was used in Abbot's Bromley for the dance prior to the 19thC, since when it has been replaced by other tunes. However, it is still used by the Thaxted Morris in Essex, where they also perform the dance in the centre of Thaxted Village. I play the tune in the key of D minor, with the G string tuned up to A, to allow a low drone. Below are details of further fiddle resources from Chris Haigh 1. Patreon 2. Books 3.
