Unemployment Benefits PEUC Extension Update | Why PEUC May Not Last 13 Weeks

Today's unemployment update is regarding the 13 week PEUC extension. Since the 13 week PEUC extension is set to end at the end of this year in December if your unemployment benefit claim balance is just now hitting 0 you many not get the full 13 weeks of the PEUC extension unless Congress vote to extend the program. Even if you don't get the full 13 weeks of PEUC extension, depending on what state you live in there are unemployment extensions available and those unemployment extensions last up to 20 more weeks, those programs that extend the unemployment benefits after the PEUC extension ends are called FED-ED (for California Unemployment Benefits only) or EB (Extended Benefits) in other states. In California, when you run out of unemployment benefits from PEUC, the CA EDD automatically files a FED-ED claim for you to see if you qualify. To qualify for FED-ED or EB you do need to meet stricter earnings requirements. The requirements for FED-ED or EB (extended benefits) are 1. 40 x your weekly benefit amount (you need to make more than that in your whole base period that the CA EDD or your local unemployment office used to calculate your weekly benefit amount) or 2. You find your highest earnings quarter in your unemployment benefit award letter and multiply that by 1.5, if you made more than that in the whole period then you qualify. If you don’t qualify for FED-ED or EB you will get a letter telling you if you were approved or denied the unemployment extension. Both the PUA unemployment program and 13 week PEUC unemployment extension expire or end December 31st, 2020 unless Congress extends these programs. Right now you can get a maximum of 59 weeks of unemployment on a regular UI claim or a maximum number of 46 weeks if you are on a PUA claim.
