"Offset backup sights have become increasingly popular with AR-15 shooters. The main optic, usually a scope, is mounted on top of the receiver, while a special mount next to it, angled about 45 degrees, holds a reflex red dot sight or backup ""iron"" sights. If your main optic fails or you need to engage a very close target, you just tilt the gun slightly to use the offset sight. Some folks say offset sights offer a genuine tactical benefit, while others think they're just a ""tacticool"" fad. What do Steve and Caleb say? There are drawbacks to offset sights. Offset-mounted backup iron sights are big ""snag hazards,"" says Caleb. If you've trained yourself to shoot your rifle from either shoulder, the backup sights could be on the wrong side of the gun in an emergency. Offset sights DO enable you to maintain a solid cheekweld on the stock when using them. When you mount a backup reflex sight on TOP of your scope or ACOG, you have to lift your cheek off the stock to use it. Caleb's view: if you're engaging both near and far targets, as is in competition, and your main optic is a scope with magnification, an offset red dot sight can be helpful in close-quarters shooting. Go with a RED DOT sight because it's FASTER to acquire than those snaggy iron sights. (Since it's mounted at the back of the receiver, it is less of a snag hazard.) It's even faster than yanking the magnification lever on an LPVO down to 1x. Just tilt the rifle and go! So the myth is actually BUSTED. The Smyth Busters agree there is a practical, tactical use for an offset backup sight in competition or self-defense scenarios.
