Europe has a rich, historical comeback story soaring above its mountains. Did you know? The bearded vulture was wiped from the Alps by 1913, erased by myths, poison, and bounties. Early rescue attempts failed completely. Then in the 1980s, scientists tried something different: a continent-wide breeding network, a new chick-rearing method, and a 40-year plan built on patience. Since then, 426 young vultures have been released. By 2025, more than 300 to 400 now glide over the Alps again, with over 100 breeding pairs restoring a role the ecosystem lost for a century. It is one of Europe’s most surprising recoveries, proof that even a nearly forgotten species can return when cooperation lasts generations. But it remains fragile. Lead, power lines, and low genetic diversity still threaten its future. Saving a species is one thing. Keeping it wild is the real test.
