In the autumn of 79 AD, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii witnessed a violent eruption from neighboring Mount Vesuvius. In the years before the eruption, some earthquakes had occurred in the area, but did not worry residents as they thought it was normal. Even in the days leading up to the eruption, small earthquakes were felt by people in the area. The actual date of the eruption was not confirmed. Traditionally, the eruption took place on August 24-25, but a modern hypothesis by scientists suggests that the eruption took place in October or November. Regardless, on that fateful day, residents in the city of Pompeii and the town of Herculaneum were going about their business. To them, it seemed like a normal day. Then, at around 1:00 PM, Mount Vesuvius violently exploded in a VEI 5 eruption. A column of ash rose higher and higher into the air, from which ash and pumice began to fall and blanket the surrounding areas. During this, rescues and evacuations occurred. At some time in the night or early the next day, pyroclastic flows begun racing downslope Vesuvius. The pyroclastic flows destroyed and incinerated everything in the close vicinity of the volcano. They knocked down or partially knocked down all structures in the way, and incinerated or suffocated the remaining populations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The flows also changed the landscape, including the coast. By the evening of the second day, the eruption had ended, leaving only a haze in the atmosphere through which the sun shone weakly.
