Comparison between PACTOR 3, VARA HF and VARA FM using Winlink Express

Recently Mike OE4MXB and I did a comparison between PACTOR 3, VARA HF and VARA FM at his station. To test the speed and reliability, we transferred an email with the size of 120kB three times. Now it is up to you to evaluate these numbers. In many tests under the most difficult conditions (QRM, QRN), Pactor was always the winner. It is not mainly about speed but about robustness against interference. Pactor simply does not break the connection and tries until the message is through. In other words: PACTOR modems are fighters HI BTW: P4 is twice as fast as P3 but these modems are not cheap :-( It is clear that VARA FM is the clear winner in terms of transmission speed due to its higher bandwidth and better signal-to-noise ratio! But VARA HF is a great software modem. Especially in terms of price/performance ratio.
