In this phase of the Clayton Undertype Steam Wagon restoration project, we turn our attention to Part 5-46U, the Lubricator Pawl 1 Spring—a compact but critical element in the steam wagon’s intricate lubrication system. This particular spring plays a vital role by applying consistent tension to the Pawl 1 component, ensuring that the ratchet mechanism operates smoothly and accurately, delivering precise lubrication to the engine’s moving parts. Despite its small size, it must be manufactured to exact specifications in order to perform reliably under varying conditions. Unfortunately, during this first attempt at crafting the spring, we encountered a few challenges that led to an unsuccessful outcome. The material selection, spring coil tightness, and tension calibration didn't come together as planned. Whether due to underestimating the spring force required or a slight error in the winding technique, the finished part failed to deliver the required performance. While this attempt didn’t meet the high standards we’re holding for this build, it’s all part of the process. Failures like this offer critical insight into both the design and fabrication requirements. In the next episode, we’ll reassess our approach, look into better materials or alternative methods, and apply what we’ve learned to produce a more successful version of the **Pawl 1 Spring**.
