On the morning of November 14, 1907, Arthur Brennan walked into the ranger station at Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley, alone. He had been gone for eleven days. The other five members of the surveying expedition had not returned with him. According to the station log kept by Ranger Edmund Walsh, Brennan appeared at approximately 7:15 a.m. He was described as "gaunt, boots worn through, clothing torn at the shoulders." Walsh noted that Brennan requested water, drank nearly a full canteen without pause, then asked to send a telegram to the U.S. Geological Survey office in San Francisco. The message, preserved in the Survey's archives, read: "Expedition terminated. Brennan only. Send retrieval."
