Close of Babul Khan STORYLINE Mutinous Bangladeshi border guards who opened fire on their officers have agreed to surrender after the government said it would grant them an amnesty and consider their demands. The guards, angry over pay, seized their headquarters and a nearby shopping mall. One person was killed and dozens of children were trapped in their school in the guards' compound. For more than four hours intermittent gunshots rang out at the headquarters, while smoke billowed from the compound. A rickshaw driver, who was shot outside the compound, died at state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital, doctors said. Three bystanders and one border guard were being treated at the hospital for wounds, doctors said The army was called in to quell the unrest. After the agreement was reached at a meeting on Wednesday between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and representatives of border guards, known as the Bangladesh Rifles, the fighting subsided and the children were able to leave. It was not immediately clear if the government would agree to all of demands, including a chance to participate in lucrative, high-paying UN peacekeeping missions.
