On Sunday, September 1, 1957, hundreds of members of the Holy Name Society of St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church boarded a train from Kingston to Montego Bay. On the return journey the train derailed as it approached Kendal in Manchester. It is the worst rail disaster in Jamaica’s history. It was the second worst train disaster in the world at the time.
