This talk explores the history and development of liberal arts education in East Asia, with an initial focus on the Greater China region (mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). It examines how liberal arts education has been shaped by distinctive social contexts and influenced by Confucian values emphasizing the cultivation of the whole person. Tracing the historical roots of liberal arts education in the Chinese context, the talk highlights the rich intercultural legacy of liberal arts approaches, particularly as developed within China’s historic Christian universities. Supported by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA), these institutions played a pivotal role in fostering liberal arts education tailored to Chinese and wider East Asian cultural and social conditions. Their enduring legacy and the continued efforts of the UBCHEA may offer valuable insights for contemporary higher education development, potentially contributing to the cultivation of global citizens capable of addressing the complex social challenges of the 21st century. ____________ 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Prof Ruth Hayhoe, Professsor at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, Canada.
