"Pen Cap Chew" is an early Nirvana song, from the times when the band was changing drummers and names, one of them being Pen Cap Chew. Written in 1987, it was recorded for the first time in May of the same year with Aaron Burckhard on drums at KAOS FM radio session in Olympia. The band's name was Skid Row. On January 3, 1988, the song was recorded at the house of their new drummer, Dale Crover from Melvins. The session was the first of the three rehearsals at Crover's place the band used to prepare for the upcoming studio session. The band's name was Ted Ed Fred. The said session happened on January 23, 1988, at Reciprocal Recording, with Jack Endino as an engineer. A bunch of songs was recorded, some of them ended up on "Bleach" and "Incesticide". The session is known as the Dale demo and the tape was crucial to Nirvana's career. It helped them to get the first press and the contract with Sub Pop. While recording "Pen Cap Chew" at Reciprocal, the band ran out of tape and didn't want to buy more, so the song wasn' recorded in full; hence the fade ending. This version was released on "With The Lights Out" and that's the one in the video. The first live performance was in March, 1987, the last one was in March, 1988. Lyrics include the second chorus which wasn't recorded at Reciprocal and can be heard on live recordings. It sheds some light on why the song is named "Pen Cap Chew": OoOo lesser god, OoOo I...
