This timeless assemblage of everyday natural treasures transports you from your manmade surroundings to the wonder of discovering a precious shell, the tactile thrill of finding a special stone or feather and the magic that ensues when you bring all the ingredients together. Perhaps an ancient language or spell is invoked, or simply a reminder that these wonders offer us a different perspective on life. The angelic white feather in this painting is from a common pigeon. The moth featured in this painting is the Clifton Nonpareil (which means "beyond compare" in French). It is the largest, most spectacular native moth, with a wingspan of 12cms (painted to scale) and is the holy-grail among moth enthusiasts. It was thought to be extinct in the 1960s but has now recolonised Southern Britain. The pink stone is rose quartz, found on the beach in Suffolk and the shell is the traditional Christian symbol for a pilgrim. The piece is broken up with the strong diagonal line of an aspen twig in bud, which is what the Clifden Nonpareil feed on as a caterpillar. Watercolour, gouache and colouring pencil with gold leaf embellishment. Signed by the artist. The painting is 22 x 28 cms.
