Real Arrow Penetration Testing: Do Heavier Arrows Really Work? In this video, we put 6 different arrows to the test, each with varying weights, and the results were surprising! We tested the Carbon Express Maxima Hunter, Carbon Express Maxima Red SD, Easton Hexx, Carbon Express Triad, Gold Tip Platinum Pierce, and Easton FMJ 5mm. To get true arrow penetration results, we started testing with field points to see how these arrows perform in real-world conditions. Have a short draw length? If you’re under 29.5 inches, your choices for speed and weight are limited. Short-draw archers often don't have the same options as those with longer draw lengths unless they crank up their poundage to extreme levels. The hunting industry is pushing products that may not be the best fit for you—don’t fall for the hype! After testing for penetration with field points, we switched to expandable broadheads, and the results were a complete surprise. This led me to switch back to fixed-blade broadheads after nearly 10 years of using Rage broadheads. With all the recent buzz about momentum and heavy arrows, we’re asking: are slower, heavier arrows really worth it?
