For a decade, Kiwi recycling and waste company Green Gorilla has been disrupting the Auckland waste service sector and dramatically impacting the construction sector's diversion of waste. Green Gorilla has played a significant role in minimising Auckland's waste since its inception in 2010. The company's Onehunga plant is already home to a construction and demolition processing facility, which opened in 2012 and diverts more than 75% of incoming construction and demolition waste from Auckland's landfills. We also manage a wood-chipping operation which turns treated wood into biofuel and untreated wood into landscaping chips and animal bedding, plus a plasterboard processing plant which successfully separates gypsum for horticultural and agricultural sectors. Providing Auckland enterprises with an alternative approach to waste management is a task Green Gorilla is well qualified for. Major Shareholder Graeme Bowkett was the founding director and CEO of Waste Management NZ Ltd and Pacific Region Operations Vice President for Waste Management Inc(USA) and Waste Management PLC (International). A pioneer in developing advanced technology collection systems, he is supported by a management team who collectively offer over 180 years of waste services industry experience. "This company was launched to maximise recovery, reuse and recycling of commercial, construction and industrial waste, otherwise destined for landfill," says Bowkett. "Waste minimisation is a philosophy we are utterly committed to." "Our site sits on the former Galway Street Landfill between 1950 and 1978. We are proud to participate in its regeneration by turning a 2.7 ha portion of it into New Zealand's largest waste processing facility where over 150,000 tonnes of waste per annum is delivered, and approximately 50 per cent is diverted from Auckland's landfills," Morgan says. 79.8% OF CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION WASTE IS DIVERTED FROM LANDFILL Our 2.7 ha Waste Processing Facility in Onehunga allows us to maximise recycling, process waste, and divert waste from landfills. The processing systems include a large-scale mechanical and manual sort line to recover timber, metals, card, plasterboard and other valuable commodities. GREEN GORILLA 'WALKS TALL' WHEN IT COMES TO OUR WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY We receive and process large volumes of construction, manufacturing and commercial waste, and hand-sorted material from transfer stations. Our 2.7ha facility in Onehunga, Auckland, is on a closed landfill. It's an impressive operation, and interesting to note that one of New Zealand's largest Resource Recovery operations is now at home above the remnants of the very activity we are trying to minimise. Our Waste Processing Facility is dedicated to recycling and processing waste material, and we achieve an overall diversion rate from the landfill of over 75% for construction and demolition waste. Waste is accepted daily, with access restricted to commercial account holders only. As with all other material entering or leaving the site, control, weighing, and billing are electronic via a number plate recognition system which operates a barrier arm for access. EACH MONTH APPROX, 10,000 TONNE OF WASTE COMES TO US FOR PROCESSING The uptake of green building techniques in the construction industry has helped better manage the number of waste materials. However, it still creates large amounts of waste that can be recycled and diverted from New Zealand landfill. This is where our specialist waste processing facility is a vital link in processing to reduce landfill and create recycled by-products. Within our gorilla-sized 3,000m² building, we operate large-scale mechanical and manual sort lines to process industry, construction and demolition waste to achieve greater than 75% diversion from landfill. The plant is operated daily to process incoming waste material. Recovered products are shipped out continuously to nearby users or processed at our facility. Call us today on 09 636 2244
