Observations on Freemasonry and Islam: A Historical Perspective to the Foundation of the Ottoman Grand Orient M.Remzi Sanver Thierry Zarcone April 17,2021 19:00 GMT There are initiation based orders in Islam that bear considerable similarities with Freemasonry, both in their culture and ritual practices. As a result, one can observe several historical instances where the reception of Freemasonry by Muslim societies was through members of these orders. After presenting an overview of the contact between Freemasonry and Islamic orders in the second half of 19. and early 20. Century, we focus on the Ottoman Empire which was a major player of world politics as well as a multicultural state founded on a territory very rich in Islamic orders. Thus, we consider the foundation of the Ottoman Grand Orient as a very interesting case study of the relationship between Freemasonry and Islam. Chair Susan M.
