A Trauma Recovery Model for Trans, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive (TNBGE) People of Color (POC)

The cumulative effects of walking through the world as a trans, nonbinary, or gender expansive (TNBGE) person, when coupled with the reality of structural and interpersonal racism, can take a heavy toll on TNBGE people of color. Currently, there are few models that offer strategies for coping with these intersecting identities from a trauma-informed perspective. This workshop, led by a trauma psychologist who identifies as a trans-masculine, non-binary Pilipinx person, will focus on ways of thinking about multiple forms of trauma, strategies for recovery, and a self-care model for TNBGE people of color (Miller & Estrellado, 2019). This workshop will provide an overview of a trauma recovery model for TNBGE people adapting Herman’s (1992) framework. In this interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice skills related to therapist self-awareness, the therapeutic alliance, conceptualization, culturally responsive formulation, and treatment planning. Participants should have some clinical experience working with TNBGE people and an awareness of basic concepts related to gender identity and TNBGE issues. Jan E.
