Danielle Desire came to SongShare believing she couldn’t sing. While she had no trouble speaking in front of people, the idea of singing in front of others felt far more vulnerable and intimidating. In this conversation, Danielle talks about how SongShare helped her understand that singing exposes more of who we are — and how learning to sing in front of others made speaking feel easier, not harder. She reflects on how fear softened through repetition, safety, and belonging, and how she was surprised to find herself volunteering to sing in public settings like karaoke without the familiar hesitation or anxiety. Danielle also shares an important realization: that you don’t have to feel happy, confident, or “in the right mood” to sing. Instead, she discovered that the peace and joy often arrive while singing. The conversation touches on vulnerability, community, and how simply listening to others sing can feel like medicine, even on days when you don’t feel like singing yourself. SongShare is a long-running group created and facilitated by Gary Stine, where people are invited to sing without judgment, performance, or pressure. The SongShare group inspired the 12-week program Singing for People Who Believe They Can’t.
