Shaping Inclusive Spaces for Patient and Caregiver Voices in Healthcare Decision Making

Power imbalances significantly shape the processes and outcomes of patient engagement, often hindering equitable participation in healthcare decision-making. This session introduces the Power Wheel, a tool designed to identify, reflect upon, and address power asymmetries within the 'places' and 'spaces' of patient engagement. By applying the Power Wheel framework, participants will explore concepts of 'power to,' 'power over,' and 'power with,' and their implications for patient partnership in healthcare. Through real-world examples and an interactive discussion led by Dr. Ambreen Sayani and Alies Maybee, attendees will learn practical strategies to recognize and mitigate these power dynamics, fostering meaningful engagement and promoting health equity. Objectives: Distinguish between 'power to,' 'power over,' and 'power with' in the context of patient engagement and describe how these concepts relate to the involvement of patient partners in healthcare decision-making. Understand the relationship between ‘place’ and ‘space’ as they relate to decision-making power. Learn how to use the Power Wheel as a tool to report, reflect and resolve power asymmetries as they relate to equitable patient engagement. More about the speakers: Dr. Ambreen Sayani, MD MS PhD, is a physician, social scientist and policy advisor. She leads the Improving Cancer Care Equity (ICCE) Lab at Women’s College Research Institute, that aims to improve cancer outcomes for all populations groups by promoting equitable cancer prevention, early detection and access to high quality care. Dr. Sayani is an Assistant Professor (status) at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Health Equity Expert Advisor for the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, and co-initiator of Equity Mobilizing Partnerships in Community. She has received multiple awards for her leadership, research and innovation in patient engagement, health policy, and cancer care equity. Alies Maybee has been a patient partner in healthcare since 2011. She collaborates in many aspects of healthcare including on research projects and areas of service delivery and policy. Alies has worked in technology, training women on assistance to use computers and get jobs, and later designing large software systems including one for doctors’ clinics. She advocates for health system change and patient/public engagement. Alies looks for new ways to involve people from all backgrounds and communities which led to co-initiating EMPaCT, a community table of people with diverse lived experiences focused on health equity. Alies is a co-founder and co-chair of the Patient Advisors Network (PAN), a national community of patient/caregiver partners.
