Shulumai is the home of the Yaaku people, and their language, Yakunte, is considered by UNESCO as critically endangered. Besides striving to save their language, the community coexists with diverse wildlife, among them the endangered African elephant and the African lion. The community, through the Shulmai Community Wildlife Conservancy, are in partnership with WWF-Kenya to improve livelihoods through conservation that benefits both wildlife and people. Thanks to support from WWF-UK and WWF-Sweden, the sustainability of the Shulmai Community Conservancy is a top priority. As they said in their own words, if they could revive a language that was down to being spoken by nine people, they can revive the populations of the endangered lion and elephants.
