Let me know down in the comments! Shownotes: Full Shownotes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A... Their Website: https://www.montmarte.net/ On Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/MontMar... Seems to be a budget brand I purchased this set for $12.99 on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3ck2Hs0 There's also a metallic set available in the same paint box style Unboxing: Just a plastic belly band to allow for hanging on a store shelf. I like this minimal packaging The palette itself is sturdily built and decently thought out. Inside is a thin, inexpensive plastic tray that holds the paints, the waterbrush, the sponge, and includes some really deep wells for mixing. The top lid is painted white enamel, and WOULD serve as a mixing surface, but I can’t get it to actually lie flat without removing it, making it unsuitable as a mixing surface. The Plein Air thumb ring is really sturdily and well built- so wherever is making the metal tins is doing a great job. The interior is really minimal, which isn’t a bad thing, and came with a plastic insert that lists the color names, pigments, lightfast info, ect. Colors Inside listed in full shownotes, linked above. Swatching: These glob up on the brush and muddy the water pretty fast, BUT the color is pretty clean and vibrant Not really any granulation- everything seems to be about the same granulation. Already like these a lot better than many of the really cheap watercolors I’ve reviewed. The Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber are kinda ehhh and the Payne’s grey is a bit weird, but the primaries are all really nice and vibrant. When you really layer them on you do start getting some opacity- we’ll see how this shakes out in the color mixing. Color Mixing: Optical: These do layer ok, but are probably not a great fix if you rely really heavily on layering and optical mixing for most of your color work, because the layers are a bit polluted, and do kinda reactivate the prior layers. Anything involving that cool yellow is trouble Atomic: Unfortunately, the neutrals (burnt sienna, burnt umber) are really weak, but in general, it was easy to mix colors, including purples, and you can mix a half-decent brown using the cool red and the cool blue.. When they finished drying, they didn’t dry much more desaturated, so really not too bad. The only real issue is any mix involving the cool yellow- it just doesn’t have a whole lot of oomph to it, so the oranges and greens mix kinda desaturated, especially those that include more yellow Lift Test: Varying degrees of liftability Wet into Wet Test: These diffuse really pretty, and you see some granulation or at least, sedimentation when adding a lot of water to a cottonrag paper. Hopefully these dry fairly saturated. Good dispersion in water Dried a little desaturated, but really not too bad Some really nice color diffusal as well- gives me hope that the fieldtest won't be too bad! Compared to other watercolors: Arteza XileyW (pricewise) Giorgione (pricewise) Pros: Tin carrying case is pretty nice, and fairly distinct Pigment info, lightfast info, opacity info are listed in the palette Lid of tin can be used as a mixing surface, also comes with removable mixing wells Inexpensive Fairly compact Plein Air loop is well constructed Cons: The neutral browns are really weak and desaturated- if you like to paint animals or landscapes, you might struggle to get the color you want. Construction of the tin sorta prevents you from using the lid as a mixing surface, unless you find a way to weigh it down Could be more compact, but a lot of space is wasted with the mixing wells Half pans are extruded little chicklets held in by a glue dot to a flimsy plastic liner- that’s definitely going to get brittle over time The way this set is laid out, it doesn’t have a lot of reusability value, but you could easily gut the tin and use magnets and halfpans as you outgrow this set Verdict Not bad. This set performed a lot better than I was expecting, and I’m hoping it does well in the field test. It’s one of those on the fence sorta sets- it seems promising, hopefully it lives up to it Music: A Quiet Thought A Typical Ride Out Finding Me Sonatina No 2 in F Major Rondo- Joel Cummins C Major Prelude Orange Octopus Sunny Travel- Nico Staf Pop in Gold- Freedom Trail Studio Bike Sharing to Paradise- Dan Bodan National Express- Dan Bodan Dance for the Wind Trio- Sir Cubworth Silver Blue Light- Kevin MacLeod #MontMarte #MontMarteWatercolors #MontMarteWatercolorreview
