A keyword search is the default search in many search tools, and the best place to start your searching. Let's look at a keyword search in QUT Library Search. Go to the Advanced search. The default 'Any field' option is the keyword search. Additional rows can be added to accommodate your keywords. Add your date range. You can then limit your results just to articles and to keyword areas of your topic. To lock your filters for future searches, click on the locking icon. Now you can change your search terms, all under the same filters. Notice the large number of results for this keyword search. You can make your search more specific by performing a subject search. Now let's explore how to find and use subject headings in library search. To identify appropriate subject headings, perform a keyword search. As you can see, searching for "artificial intelligence" brings back more than 1 million results. To narrow these results, it is helpful to search by subject headings. Click on one of the search results that you wish to explore further and scroll down to the subject terms. Click on one of the listed subject headings to see other materials which use the same subject heading. This takes the number of results down to around 600,000. Notice that the subject heading now appears in the search box at the top of the page and that the field is set to subject. Additional keywords or subject headings can be added to the search to further refine the results. Using filters will also narrow the results further. To search for a list of related subject headings, select 'Browse items' and then select subject terms from the 'Browse by' drop down menu. Enter a relevant keyword to see a list of related subject headings. Click a subject heading from this list to see relevant materials. Now, let's look at how to search by subject heading in a specialist database in this case, Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts. Note that subject headings in this database are found in the Thesaurus. In other databases, they maybe listed as subject headings or subject terms. Select 'Thesarus' and enter the relevant keyword in the 'Browsing' box. Check the box next to the subject heading you wish to explore and click 'Add'. Note that the selected subject heading is now in the search box. Click 'Search'. There are over 6,000 results for the subject heading "artificial intelligence". Narrow these results further by searching for more subject headings, keywords or by using limiters. January 2022
