Traditional singing and the preservation of local customs have a special meaning for them. The group consists of around 20 men aged between 20 and 90, who meet regularly to pass on old songs from their region. Through song, they nurture the identity of the community and preserve the cultural heritage of Ražanac. Ražanac is a small, traditional fishing village that has preserved its peaceful, authentic character. It is located only 20 kilometers away from Zadar, which is one of the region's major tourist destinations. In the village you can admire typical Dalmatian architecture with stone houses and narrow streets. There are also historical buildings, such as the Church of St. Andrew and the remains of old fortresses, testifying to the region's turbulent past. The culture is deeply rooted in Dalmatian traditions. One of its elements is "klapa", traditional polyphonic singing. Residents cultivate old customs, such as local festivals and religious celebrations. The lives of Ražanac's residents are strongly linked to the sea and fishing, as well as olive and grape growing. Sjevernokotarsko priobalje is a region that combines Slavic traditions with Italian influences, especially Venetian, which were strong during the centuries-long domination of Dalmatia by the Republic of Venice. The proximity to the sea has influenced the lifestyle of the inhabitants, which is reflected in the songs, music and culture. Maritime motifs and the lives of fishermen and sailors often appear in local folk songs, which have a melancholic and melodic character. These songs also served as a way of telling about the hardships of life at sea and longing for loved ones. Italian influences, mainly Venetian, contributed to the development of polyphonic music and enriched dance styles, in which Mediterranean elements can be heard. Traditional folk costumes from the region also have traces of Venetian influence, as can be seen in the cut and decoration. “More se muti oblak se diže” is a ‘na bas’ song. The melody leads the voices smoothly, creating harmonic consonances that reflect the influence of Mediterranean music. An interesting element is the use of a third voice, (kontrabas) acting as de finalis - the tonal climax of the song. This gives the song a richer harmonic texture and highlights its roots in the polyphonic tradition typical of coastal cultures. --- About us – Balkan Polyphony is a field research project that collects traditional music from the Balkan area.
