In this video, Paul Anthony has the honour of interviewing Eladio Diaz, Davidoff's master cigar blender while at the Tabadom factory in the Dominican Republic. Eladio explains that he learned to blend cigars with time. For him, this began in 1979 when he managed a factory. He made several brands including Griffin's with Bernard Grobet. In his day-to-day life as a master blender, Eladio spends much of his time in the factory. His routine begins by seeing what the factory workers and rollers are crafting. Not only does he verify the quality control, but he is constantly sampling the different cigars. Eladio also explains how he keeps his palate clean when testing all these samples. Furthermore, Eladio explains how the blending process begins, which starts with the Davidoff headquarters sending a brief asking for a brief for specific flavours. Consequently, Eladio crafts a cigar blend using his intimate familiarity with the tobacco inventory. In a single month, Eladio will blend over 25 cigars. While some cigar blends take time, others come as inspiration in a single moment. These blends are crafted with a larger vitola, which tends to feature a ring gauge between 52 and 54. Each blend usually consists of over 7 types of tobacco, which makes the task remarkably complex as it requires specific proportions. Eladio's passion for cigars has been alive since he was 6 years old, when he started working in cigars. As such, he feels that he can listen to the tobacco and understand its flavours in an intimate way. Therefore, he knows what each type of tobacco will bring to the blend. In his six decades working in tobacco, Eladio has witnessed many innovations. For instance, Davidoff have developed many seed hybrids that offer a greater variety of flavour profiles. Some of these varieties have has many as five or six crossings, which take years to develop. Blending begins for Eladio at the moment that he can taste the tobacco once Manuel Peralta, Davidoff's agronomist, has released it from the farm and curing barns. As an example, the 2006 Limited Edition released for Zino Davidoff's centenary, was an inspiration born from new tobaccos. Originally a test cigar, it was so successful in the factory, it was released as a celebrated blend that is still in demand today. Although Eladio is particularly proud of the Puro Doro, he states that he has no favourite blend. He continues that it wouldn't be fair on the others if he was to marry a single blend! However, he adds that he maintains an objectivity by not being tied to a particular cigar blend. During the interview, Eladio Diaz revealed that they were smoking a cigar that may soon be released to celebrate Dr Schneider's 100th anniversary. Eladio concludes by leaving a few words for the younger generations and the new cigar smokers. Cigars is a life, a passion, and nanother mentality.
