$55 million. That's about what New Zealand spends on fossil fuels every day and most of it heads offshore. That's around $20 billion a year (and the Government is signing us up for a bit more on top with a new LNG terminal). Keeping those billions in New Zealand and investing in our own productivity, households and economic future would be transformative for our energy system, household bills and economy. All our homes going electric has the potential to SAVE $29 million a day, or $11 billion a year. And there's no competition when it comes to emissions. The Government could help households save thousands on their bills right now by signing off on low-interest long-term loans through the Ratepayer Assistance Scheme. That would help property owners get past the upfront cost barrier of solar, batteries and space and hot water heat pumps. And that's the kind of downward pressure we really want to see.
