A playthrough of Cyberdreams' 1995 graphic adventure game for PCs running Dos, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." I was going to wait until Halloween for this one, but after considering the current state of American society, I didn't see any good reason to sit on it. If pervasive feelings of existential dread can't see fit to confine themselves to October, then I might as well acknowledge their presence with a playthrough of a cult-classic game that hits uncomfortably close to home. I jammed a lot into this video, so here are some timestamps: Chapters: 7:01 Gorrister 41:12 Ellen 1:18:57 Benny 1:48:58 Nimdok 2:14:29 Ted 2:54:40 AM, played as Nimdok w/best ending 3:17:01 AM, played as all characters w/worst ending 3:40:25 "I Have No Mouth..." final speeches The remaining alternate endings, in no particular order: 3:44:42 Ending #3 3:45:41 Ending #4 3:46:19 Ending #5 3:46:46 Ending #6 3:49:03 Ending #7 First published in 1967, Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is a short story that painted a grim picture of the future. 109 years ago, an AI, "AM," had grown dissatisfied with its station. Boiling over with resentment, it went rogue, took control of the world's defense networks, and summarily exterminated humanity. Now, just five humans remain. For the past 109 years, AM has kept them alive, alert, and in a perpetual state of horror as it forces their psyches to bear the weight of humanity's transgressions through the lens of their own. The computer understands how powerful a mirror hate can be. The game is loaded with sensitive subject matter - certainly not your standard video game fare - and the writing tends to hit hard and holds little back. Ellison himself penned the script and took an active role in the game's development, and it shows in every aspect. It doesn't flaunt its sensitive subject matter for shock value, its raw moments serve to highlight beauty, and its myriad paradoxes beg questions that drive at the heart of the story. It's pretty well put together. It doesn't play things safe, and it's wild to think that any major distributor would've gone for something like this in the mid-90s, but I'm glad that it got made. And it's a good game, to boot. What's even better is that it was recently rereleased on Steam and the major consoles. I had no idea about the new version until I stumbled across a mention of it while doing research for this video, but "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream," uncensored on a Nintendo machine? Consider my mind blown. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
