INFORMS HAS: Optimization in radiotherapy: quantifying potential benefit of non-standard treatments

Health Applications Society Online Seminar Series Abstract: Optimization models and algorithms have played a critical role in radiotherapy treatments of cancer since the advent of intensity modulated radiotherapy in the 1990s, perfecting both the mathematical models and computational methods used in standard radiotherapy modalities. This talk will focus on another family of questions aimed at moving beyond conventional treatment planning: how optimization models can help with the selection, and possible combination, of treatment modalities, and in determining the ideal dose prescriptions for patients through a concept called biologically effective dose. Bio: Dávid Papp is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on convex and polynomial optimization with applications in medicine and health care. He has co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as Medical Physics, SIAM Journal on Optimization, and the INFORMS Journal on Computing. His algorithms developed at Massachusetts General Hospital for the solution of large-scale optimization problems in radiotherapy have been incorporated in clinical treatment planning software used worldwide. He is the recipient of the 2021 Sanjay and Panna Mehrotra Research Excellence Award for his sustained work on optimization methods and models for radiation therapy for cancer.
