00:05 – Prélude 05:13 – Choral 11:45 – Fugue This recording of César Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue appeared on one side of Hana Dvořáková’s debut LP for Panton and demonstrates supreme grasp of large-scale form, where well-placed climaxes play an important expressive role, as do the silences between musical sections. The other side contains Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano and Strings with Gennady Rozhdestvensky and the Czech Philharmonic, for which a digital transfer has already been made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hana Dvořáková studied at the Brno Conservatory with Inessa Janíčková and later at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Josef Páleníček and František Rauch, with additional guidance from Miroslav Langer and Josef Vlach. She also pursued studies in conducting. After graduation, she received further lessons from Paul Badura-Skoda and Vlado Perlemuter, and attended masterclasses with Ferenc Rados and Rudolf Kehrer. Among her competition successes are second prize at the 1973 Beethoven’s Hradec Competition (won that year by Krystian Zimerman), second prize at the Chopin Competition in Marienbad (1974), a special jury prize at the Busoni Competition in Bolzano (1977), where she reached the final round, as well as accolades from the Alfredo Casella Competition in Naples (1974) and the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris (1978). Dvořáková frequently appeared as a chamber musician, collaborating with cellist Bohuslav Pavlas, the Pražák Quartet and the Martinů Quartet. She spent 12 years of her artistic life in Asia, combining an active performing schedule with teaching at a university in Seoul. Her concerts there ranged from orchestral appearances and chamber music performances to a solo recital at the border of South and North Korea, the latter receiving wide media coverage including CNN. She returned to Prague in 2008 to devote herself entirely to teaching. Her solo repertoire typically did not focus on overtly virtuosic display. A selection of works she was particularly associated with includes: – 13 Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, the Italian Concerto, 2 Partitas and 2 French Suites – Numerous Beethoven sonatas, most notably Op. 101 – Schubert's Sonatas D. 784 and D. 845 – Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor and Fantasy Op. 49 – Schumann’s Fantasie Op. 17 – Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel Op. 24 – Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue – Debussy’s Préludes, Book I (complete) – Various works by Ravel (Ondine, Jeux d’eau, Sonatine) – Scriabin’s Sonata No. 3 – Prokofiev’s Sonatas No. 2 and 3, and Visions Fugitives – Ginastera’s Sonata No. 1 – Berg's Sonata Op. 1 – Dvořák’s Theme and Variations Op. 36 – Substantial piano works by Janáček – Martinů's Three Czech Dances She also appeared as soloist in works for piano and orchestra by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Grieg, Dvořák, Ravel, Prokofiev, and gave the Czech premiere of Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano and Strings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recording credits Label: Panton – 8111 0496 Music director: Vojtěch Mojžíš Sound engineer: Václav Zamazal LP cover art: Zdeněk Hašler Photograph: Alan Pajer (1985) Recorded at: Motorlet Works Club Studio, Prague, 13–14 May 1985 Recording used with permission of Hana Dvořáková and Supraphon ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Playlist of Czech Pianists: • Jan Heřman | Piano Works by Czech Composers
