Written by GoHeels.com It took a 40-minute fight from No. 15 North Carolina women's basketball to push past Stanford on its home court, coming down to a defensive stop from the Tar Heels to secure the 69-67 win from Maples Pavilion on Sunday. The Tar Heels go 2-0 in their week out on the West Coast, becoming the first Atlantic Conference School to win both. With five scoring in double-figures for North Carolina (20-4, 8-3 ACC), the Tar Heels earn their second straight win in the series versus Stanford (11-10, 3-7 ACC) and their first as an ACC foe. Earning the victory, Carolina has reached the 20 win plateau for the 30th time in school history and is the fastest to the point since the 2012-13 season. Carolina has been menacing on the road, going 6-0 overall this season and 5-0 in ACC play. The mark is the best road start in conference action since the 2006-07 campaign. Posting a career-high tying four threes', Alyssa Ustby paced the Tar Heels with a team-high 16 points, adding eight rebounds and two assists. Lexi Donarski and Maria Gakdeng added 12 points a-piece, as Carolina scored 28 points overall in the paint. Reaching double-figures for the second time in ACC action, Grace Townsend scored 10 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Coming in clutch once again, Reniya Kelly posted 10 points for her third straight game in double-figures with half of her points coming within the final quarter. Leading Carolina off the glass, Blanca Thomas grabbed her personal-best in conference action with nine rebounds. Proving to be a physical affair from the jump, Carolina relied on Gakdeng's presence on the inside to grab six points in the first quarter. As UNC began to heat up towards the end of the first 10 and limited Stanford to no field goals in the final three minutes, the Tar Heels jumped out to grab a solid 20-12 lead. As the Cardinal forced UNC into a scoring drought, Stanford tightened the Tar Heel hold by making its way to the charity stripe. As Carolina worked to get the ball back to Gakdeng in the paint, she hit double-figures for the 10th time this season before the end of the second quarter. Despite Stanford pulling within three with under a minute remaining in the first half, Kelly drained a three from the top of the arc to give Carolina a 39-32 lead heading into the break. The Tar Heels found themselves in an early offensive groove to kick off the second half, to extend its lead to double-figures. Despite facing a scoring lull, Carolina's offense kept it in control to lead at 58-49 through three. Read More: https://goheels.com/news/2025/2/2/wom...
