On this day in 1790, Jacob Frank passed away. Born in 1726 in Podolia, now Ukraine, Frank was a charismatic figure who claimed to be the reincarnation of the false messiah Shabtai Tzvi, and our forefather Yaakov. He led the Frankist movement, which rejected traditional Judaism and the Talmud, advocating instead for a syncretic faith blending Jewish mysticism and Christian theology. At its peak, Frank's influence led 50,000 Jews away from traditional Judaism, a seismic shift that sparked fierce opposition from Jewish leaders. His followers, known as "Anti-Talmudists," declared loyalty to the Zohar while denouncing the Talmud, a rejection that culminated in a public disputation and the burning of tens of thousands of Talmudic volumes in 1757. Frank’s dramatic life took another turn in 1759 when he and thousands of his followers underwent mass baptism into Roman Catholicism, symbolizing what he described as a transitional stage toward an ultimate, revealed religion. Despite their outward conversion, Frank and his followers retained secretive mystical beliefs, arousing suspicion among both Catholic and Jewish communities. This led to his arrest and 13-year imprisonment for heresy, during which time his followers remained fervently devoted, viewing him as a martyr and maintaining active communication. Frank’s rejection of the Talmud and his audacious blending of religious ideas left a divisive mark on Jewish and Christian societies alike. In his final years, Frank lived in Offenbach, Germany, as the self-styled "Baron of Offenbach," surrounded by a loyal court of followers. After his death, his daughter Eve assumed leadership of the Frankist sect, though the movement gradually dissipated. Frank’s life and teachings remain a striking example of the disruptive power of charismatic leadership when it is driven by misguided ideas.
