How to remove growths from an older dog with a ligature (Very Strong cotton thread) to cut off the blood supply to a skin growth. I have used this method occasionally over many years with excellent results. This method involves shaving off hairs around the growth and with very strong thread, the growth is pulled up and the thread is tied in a granny knot, passing the end of the thread through twice, so that once tightened it remains tight. A final knot is tied to make sure and the ends of the thread are cut off. In days gone by, lurcher, terrier and hounds men used to tie off growths / tumors /tumours with the hairs from a horses tail In many poor countries, where a veterinary surgeon is not an option, this method of removing tumours is an option worth sharing. I have used the same method on myself to remove skin tags, again without complications. That said, please consult your veterinary practice about this method as an option for them to avoid having your older dog anaesthetised because of the inherent risks of respiratory and heart failure.
