Hey HVAC Technicians! This video shows you how to change an AC compressor. A home air conditioner compressor is the heart of the central air conditioning system. If you don't install the compressor correctly, you could be doing more harm than good. AC compressor replacement should be done by a professional. It is a precise task for an HVAC technician that involves more than someone who wants to remove and replace an ac condenser's compressor. We'll start off by recovering the AC's refrigerant into a recovery tank. We can't just pump it down into the compressor because that's what we are changing out. After you recover the system, protect the copper lines from getting dirt in them by putting some tape over the open ends. Unscrew the bolts holding the compressor to the fame of the condenser. A good HVAC tech will vacuum out the bottom of the condenser too. We always want to do clean work. Next, lift the compressor out of the unit and place the new one in. Be sure to bolt the new compressor to the frame again with the provided bolts, rubber grommet, and washer. Braze the new lineset in with a new filter drier. You'll be vacuuming the lineset down to clean them, but a filter drier will soak up excess moisture in the lines after you've changed the compressor and started running the AC again. After you vacuum the system down to below 500 microns, use some nitrogen to pressurize the system and make sure you have no leaks in the copper lineset. Then you can charge the system back up with R-22 Freon, R-410a refrigerant, or whatever refrigerant the system was using. Dial-in the charge by checking the subcool and supercharge.
