This tutorial explains the power behind using pre-comps for text in After Effects. You’ll learn what a pre-comp is, how to make a pre-comp with a text layer, how to edit text inside a pre-comp, how to make variations of a pre-comp, and how to apply effects to a pre-comp. By putting text into a pre-comp then using the pre-comp throughout your After Effects project, you can make changes to the text layer once and have the text update throughout the entire project. Pre-comps (or "Pre-Compositions" if we’re being formal) are basically Nested Sequences if you’re familiar with them in Premiere. Or if you’re more familiar with Avid Media Composer, it’s like taking clips and collapsing them into a Sub-Master. To create a pre-comp in After Effects, select the layer(s) you want to be in the pre-comp then use the keyboard shortcut Command+Shift+C if you’re on a Mac or Control+Shift+C if you’re on Windows. In the Pre-compose box that pops up, give your pre-comp a name and click OK. You can now take the pre-comp and use it throughout your project like you would any other layer. You can add effects to it, scale it, fade it, keyframe it, etc. If/when you need to edit the text, jump into the pre-comp and fix the text layer itself. It then updates throughout the project. If you want to make a duplicate of the pre-comp, select it in the Project Panel and hit Command+D if you’re on a Mac or Control+D if you’re on Windows. Edit the text or elements inside the new pre-comp and now use this new pre-comp wherever you need it to go.
